Born 1942 in Cork, she is an Emeritus Fellow of Trinity College, Dublin, where she taught for over fifty years. She has published articles and edited books on medieval and Renaissance literature and on translation, as well as nine collections of poetry, and was Ireland Chair of poetry (2016-2019). The Mother House (Gallery Press) received the Irish Times / Poetry Now Award, 2020. Her Collected Poems appeared from Gallery this year. She is the 2020 recipient of the 1573 International Poetry Award of the International Festival of Poetry and Liquor in Luzhou.
